Originally bred as a herding dog, the Rottweiler is known for being a great companion. Even today they are still used as police dogs and guard dogs. The Rottweiler has a fantastic perception and they are extremely loyal.

This is by far one of the most popular breeds in the world and they are also one of the smartest dog breeds as well! They are known for being very affectionate, patient, and intelligent. Labs are super quick learners and can train well. No wonder they are one of the top breed choices for service dogs!

  1. Your list is incorrect! In the 1970s Animal behaviorists and psychologists determined in testing nearly 400 breeds that the list should go as follows.
    1. U.K.C. registered English Shepherds the most intelligent breed.
    2.Then separately registered Border Collie.
    3.A.K.C. Poodle.
    4.A.K.C. Shetland Sheepdog.
    In the late 80s and 90s A.K.C. people using testing and Obedience competition results arrived at.
    1.Border Collie.
    2.Poodle.
    3.Shetland Sheepdog.
    4.Belgian Tervuren.
    5.Belgian Sheepdog.
    6.Belgian Malinois.
    7.Labrodor Retriever.
    8.Golden Retriever.
    9.Doberman Pinscher.
    10.Pappion.

  2. Why not a greyhound, I have one, uber intelligent, agree with most of the dogs, but no greyhounds.

    After many, many years of entering obedience trials, I have to say your list is wrong, too. The smart ones win most often! The main breeds to win and showed the highest trainability, were standard poodles, dobermans, shelties, malinois’, border collies, and goldens. Yes, there were the odd papillons, or mini poodle, or jrt, but the top breeds are listed. Smart also pertains to workign ability, I had my own 4 lb. yorkie that learned everything hat my husbands police trained mailinois learned, some of it she learned by just watching us working the mal … we would laugh when she found a bag of drugs that was as big as she was, or when she would be told the attack command, then grab someone by their pants cuff..and when told to release she would immediately stop and jump up to kiss the person she had just attacked. A dog is what you put into it….time, patience, training, just pick a ‘smart’ breed to start with.
